Welder Career Description
Welders join two or more pieces of metal together, using different welding processes and various types of welding equipment .
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Welders' work varies from repair and maintenance welding, to construction and fabrication. They weld many types of metal and have to decide which processes to use
before they start. They must take the type of metal, its thickness and other factors into consideration. Welders must also make sure that all safety regulations to protect their hands and eyes are met.
Recognizing welding defects and correcting them, and the interpretation of engineering drawings and specifications are also part of this job. Their skills are used in the building and maintenance of pipelines, boilers, nuclear reactors and motor cars, including the ship building or ship repair industry. Welders work in many different conditions and may sometimes have to work on large constructions or in confined spaces.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Welders must have good eye-hand coordination, the ability to concentrate for long time periods and be physically fit. They must be able to work very accurately and pay attention to detail. They must also be able to interpret technical and engineering drawings.
Where can I work?
Heavy and light engineering industries, gate and fence industries employ welders.
