The task of vehicle drivers is the safe and skilful driving of vehicles that are used to transport cargo and passengers.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
The nature of vehicle drivers' work depends to a large extent on the firm or company where they are employed. Heavy vehicle drivers employed by furniture transport companies are responsible for the loading, unloading and packing of furniture.
Government departments also employ vehicle drivers. Besides those that are employed by big organisations, there are also smaller transport contractors, as well as persons who own their own vehicles and work for themselves.
Besides driving the vehicle, vehicle drivers are also responsible for the care of their vehicle. This includes the checking of systems such as the brake system, electrical systems, lubrication system and cooling system of the vehicle. Defects should immediately be reported to the persons concerned with repairing the vehicle.

Vehicle drivers should be safety conscious in order to apply the principles of defensive and protective driving. They should be attentive with good judgment ability and be able to act quickly in an emergency situation. They should have good sight and no physical impediments that will prevent them from driving the vehicle safely and effectively. They should also have an excellent sense of responsibility.

There exists a shortage in this line of work, especially for persons who have licenses for heavy and extra heavy vehicles. The committed and safe driver will always find work and those who are prepared to work hard and make sacrifices can also earn a good salary. Employment opportunities are available at most transport, delivery, and bus companies.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Persons with enough experience, funds and the necessary licenses, may buy their own vehicles and start their own transport or delivery company.
