Traffic Officer Career Description
Traffic officers have an interesting and dynamic occupation. Their main objective is to ensure the safe and free flow of traffic on public roads, as well as law enforcement, education, assistance and providing information to the public.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Traffic officers are involved in maintaining law and order by means of patrol work consisting of foot, motorcycle and car patrol. They also have powers of arrest and are always on the look-out for reckless and/or drunk drivers, as well as for non-roadworthy vehicles on public roads.
They must be prepared to work under all conditions and during week-ends and public holidays.

What kind of personality do I need?
This position requires from applicants proper insight, the maintaining of sound judgement and reasonable knowledge of human nature. Healthy human relations enjoy a high priority since traffic officers are in the service of the public. Traffic officers must have a warm, friendly approach, but must be able to be firm and resolute when situations so require. They must also be very observant and at least 18 years of age.
Where can I work?
Traffic officers are employed by municipalities and provincial administrations. Employment possibilities are good.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
There are no possibilities for self-employment.
