Sport Manager Career Description
The sport manager's task is to organize sport and co-ordinate sport programmes for people to improve their quality of life.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Because millions of dollars are spent on sport yearly, sport managers must design and develop organisation structures and management systems so that there is control over the large-scale investment and sponsorships. The Comrades road race is just one example, which requires enormous organizing.
The scientific design and management of training programmes for top sportsmen and women, as well as the ordinary person, who wants to keep fit, are some of the functions of sport managers. As a result of the dual training of sport managers, namely management, as well as recreation and sport courses, they also take the management of an enterprise, for example of a gymnasium or a sports club on them. They must also be able to manage financial matters and advise in obtaining sponsors.
Sport managers are also involved in personnel affairs such as recruitment, selection, development and motivation of personnel.

What kind of personality do I need?
The person, who wants to become a sports manager, must have an interest in recreation and sports, as well as in a management field. Through participation in sport, they obtain a good idea of their future working conditions. Active sport participation and achievement are however not a prerequisite. They must be able to get on well with people and must have a head for business.
Where can I work?
Sports administrator, sports club manager and sports marketer are a few occupations a person can pursue. Occupations such as sport advancement officer and sports promoter may also be pursued.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Persons can manage their own sport enterprises. A creative person can be involved with the design of unique sports products and sports services and the development of new ideas. Agents for professional sportsmen also have their own agencies and plan and manage the activities of sportsmen.
