Shopfitter Career Description
Shop fitting is considered one of the more creative trades in the building industry. Prospective shop fitters only have to walk down a street in any town or city to realise that every shop has a different character in its decor and fittings to attract the attention of passing customers.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Qualified shopfitters agree that their work is never dull or uninteresting. No two jobs are ever the same and very few fittings are standard. Each shop, in fact, has an individuality of its own according to the needs of the owner and the size and shape of the premises.
The work of fitting out a shop takes place in both a workshop or factory, as well as in the shop itself, in that certain furnishings are manufactured in a workshop and then mounted and finished off in the shop. Basically two materials, Le. aluminium and timber are used to manufacture the different components required for shopfitting.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Shopfitters must have good health and the ability to work neatly. A natural ability for handicrafts would be to their advantage. Shopfitters must have the ability to achieve quality finishes and sufficient versatility to improvise from time to time.
Where can I work?
There are employment opportunities in the building industry because there will always be shops that need to be fitted.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Many shopfitters eventually also start their own successful businesses.
