Sheetmetal Worker Career Description

Sheet metal workers manufacture various types of articles out of sheet metal with the maximum thickness of three millimeters. These articles vary from aircraft parts to ordinary domestic articles.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Sheet metal workers use different types of metal, such as tin, copper, zinc, stainless steel, bronze and aluminum to manufacture a large variety of articles. Specifications are received in the form of drawings, plans or even models.

The specifications are measured and traced onto the metal. It is also indicated where the metal should be cut, bent or joined. The metal can be cut by hand or with a specially designed machine. The metal is then bent into the desired shape, soldered, brazed and welded along the seams and finished off.

Sheet metal workers are also responsible for the cleaning and rounding off of articles. Sometimes the articles must be treated against rust by galvanizing, tin-plating or treating them with certain chemicals. Sheet metal workers work indoors in workshops most of the time.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Sheet metal workers must have good eye-hand co-ordination and perceptual abilities. The ability to work accurately, good health and depth perception are essential qualities. Sheet metal worker should have a mechanical aptitude. They should be able to work in a team as well as on their own.

Where can I work?

Contractors specializing in heating, refrigerating, air-conditioning and air pollution equipment, commercial building, mining, etc. employ sheet metal workers.
