Security Officer Career Description
Factors such as the high crime rate and the nature of an organization's activities give rise to the need for security personnel who can provide security and protection of material, information and personnel.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
An organisation can develop its own in-house security force (in-house security), or it can rely on security services rendered by private security companies (contract security).
Security officers normally work shifts, which will include night shifts. They will often be expected to work overtime, for which they are remunerated.
There is a definite element of danger involved in security work. The essential task security officers are required to perform is the protection of lives and property. Security officers can specialize in various fields such as armed response, retail security, investigation of crime, dog handling and many others e.g. an instructor at an accredited training centre.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need?
They must be reliable, honest and have an observant nature, must be of impeccable integrity and should have no previous criminal record of a serious nature. They must be in a good physical condition and at least aged eighteen.
Where can I work?
Numerous security companies and organisations employ security officers. Employment opportunities are made easier when they can prove registration with the Security Officers Board therefore it is advised that one first registers and then seek employment.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
With the necessary experience, security officers can start their own security companies.
