Radiation Protectionist Career Description

Radiation protectionists are involved in the protection of humans and the environment against the dangerous effects of the incorrect use of radiation and radioactive materials.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

On the operational level the radiation protection officers (RPO's) execute radiation protection monitoring and control programmes for workers, the public and environment. A radiation protection monitor (RPM) is trained to perform the measurements in a monitoring programme.

On the scientific level radiation protection specialists (RPS's) assess radiation doses or risks and environmental impacts while also planning and implementing radiation protection monitoring and control programmes. Through research new technologies for solving radiation protection and radioactive waste management problems are developed.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? One must be interested in nuclear technology or other applications of radiation, such as the protection of human beings and their environment against the harmful effects of sources of radiation. One must also like solving problems and doing investigations.

Where can I work?

Some of the largest employers of radiation protection specialists are the Atomic Energy Corporation, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, National Accelerator Centre, Council for Nuclear Safety, various gold and uranium mines, the Department of Health as well as universities.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Yes, you can act as private consultant and advise institutions on the safe utilization and application of radiation.
