Purchasing managers ensure the effective supply of raw materials, equipment, merchandise and services to an enterprise, by buying items which are used for processing or for resale.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Most large enterprises have a specialized section, which deals with the purchasing of merchandise, goods and services. Purchasing managers consolidate the needs of the different departments, find suitable suppliers and negotiate reasonable prices, delivery dates and specific aspects of importance with suppliers.
Purchasing managers must create good relationships with suppliers and find those suppliers who offer the best value for the
company's money. They must therefore have good knowledge of negotiation techniques.
Purchasing managers should be well-informed concerning the particular needs of a company, available goods and services, possible suppliers, prices and price tendencies and methods to keep the purchasing cost of goods and services as low as possible.
What kind of personality do I need? Purchasing managers must recognize and make use of favorable opportunities. They must be willing to take calculated risks. Purchasing managers must have good judgment, as well as organizational and negotiating skills. They must also be honest persons with initiative and integrity.
