Plumber Career Description

Plumbers install and repair sanitation, drainage and water pipes in houses, offices, flats, apartments and public buildings.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

With the many technological advances today, plumbers are required to install and connect appliances in various materials according to very stringent standards that comply with Health and Building Regulations, as well as those of the local authority. Plumbers play an important role in the prevention of the spreading of dangerous diseases and the enhancement of the health of the community by providing fresh portable water, proper sanitation and drainage, as well as preventing the entry of water into buildings.

Plumbers also spend much of their time at the bench, cutting, bending and joining up sections of piping for bathroom and kitchen equipment. Repairs and alterations form a major part of their work. Simple tasks, such as the replacement of washers in leaky faucets or the mending of burst pipes, also form part of their daily tasks.

What kind of personality do I need? Plumbers must have finger dexterity, good eye-hand co-ordination and spatial perception to work neatly and accurately. They must also have the ability to understand architects' drawings and be able to take measurements accurately.
