Optical Technician Career Description
Optical technicians prepare lenses according to prescription from optometrists and ophthalmologists. Spectacles and contact lenses are important visual aids to anyone with visual problems. Optical technicians render a valuable service by producing high quality spectacles and contact lenses.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Optical technicians receive specific instructions concerning lenses from optometrists or ophthalmologists. These prescriptions contain details on aspects such as the size, shape and strength of the lens, location of optical centre, position of bifocal segments (if required) and the type of frame.
Optical technicians only have to fit lenses according to clients' needs, since the lenses and frames are imported and stock of prepared articles is held by optical laboratories.
In the manufacture of lenses, optical technicians must first examine the lenses for defects in the glass as well as the curve, thickness and size of the glass. The lenses are cut with a machine to produce the prescribed curve, and then buffed and polished. The lenses must be shaped to fit the desired frame according to prescription.
Optical technicians also repair damaged lenses and frames and prepare contact lenses. They work in well-equipped laboratories, which may be noisy at times due to the polishing and grinding machinery.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Accuracy, good eye-hand co-ordination and good vision are essential qualities. Optical technicians must have a mechanical aptitude and enjoy doing fine handwork.
