Locksmith Career Description
Locksmithing is the art of opening or closing locks without the facility of the original key. Locksmiths also repair, replace and rebuild all locks and their mechanical parts. They are also able to duplicate keys.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
In emergencies, such as when customers are locked out of cars, homes or offices, locksmiths pick the locks if the keys are inside, or make duplicate keys if the keys are lost.
Sometimes they work outdoors in unpleasant weather and have to be "on call" around the clock for emergencies. Combination locks are opened by manipulation or by use of a drill. Locksmiths repair damaged locks by replacing tumblers, springs and other parts. Some locksmiths install and repair burglar and fire alarm systems.
Locksmiths travel with motor vehicles, equipped like workshops, to save money and traveling time (mobile workshops).

What kind of personality do I need?
If you are not tactful and dependable, you will not be successful in this occupation. Also, remember that locksmiths work with people and therefore require a positive, pleasant and supportive attitude towards them.
This profession requires mechanical aptitude, good eye-hand co-ordination, excellent eyesight, meticulous accuracy, manual dexterity, the ability to concentrate well and neat appearance of the person.
A good reputation will preserve the public's confidence in the locksmith. A keen sense of right and wrong is essential, as locksmiths are the "guardians of security".
Where can I work?
Locksmiths work for locksmith shops, hardware and department stores, large industrial plants, safe and lock manufacturers and also for themselves. Some locksmiths specialize in installing or repairing burglar and fire alarm systems.
The demand for locksmiths is limited. Security consciousness is constantly increasing; therefore opportunities may favour locksmiths, who know how to install and service electronic security systems.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Persons with the necessary experience and financial support may start their own business. They can possibly specialize in burglar and fire alarm systems, especially since security has become so important to people. They can also make use of a mobile workshop, which will save money and traveling time.
