Light Delivery Van Driver Career Description
Drivers of light delivery vans,
safely transport light carriages with a delivery van.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Delivery van drivers transport goods from the supplier to the consumer or client. The exact nature of their work will depend on the nature of the work undertaken by their employers, for example the delivery van driver of a florist will deliver bouquets to clients and collect flowers and containers at the market.
Before delivery van drivers commence with their tasks in the morning, they receive delivery notes and check their vehicles. They test the lights, brakes and indicators, make sure that there is enough oil, water and petrol in the tank and check the general condition of their vehicles. Any defects should be reported.
The drivers, or their assistants, unload the goods at the clients, who sign the delivery note. They then receive receipts for the goods. It is sometimes also expected of the drivers to receive money when they deliver the goods. Drivers who collect used linen and deliver clean linen, should check the linen to prevent losses.
Drivers usually have a regular routine of loading and unloading goods. These drivers can take turns on the different routes to relieve the monotony of the routes.
It is sometimes expected of drivers to work night shifts or very early in the morning for example with newspapers that have to be delivered very early. Most drivers drive on the same route every day, but depending on new deliveries, it could change.
The drivers should be very attentive, as driving can be exhausting. Shifts are worked according to the delivery hours and arrangements. Each employer determines their drivers' working hours, leaves and salaries.
When no assistants are available to help the drivers with deliveries, they must load and unload the goods themselves. Sometimes they also have to work in bad weather.
