Lift Mechanic Career Description
Lift mechanics are involved mainly with the construction, erection, testing and maintenance of lifts, escalators and hoists.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Qualified lift mechanics may specialize in various departments of an elevator manufacturing company. In the department where the design specifications (according to which a lift must be manufactured) are drafted, lift mechanics can contribute in an important way, since they have the knowledge and experience of different types of lifts and escalators, and their specific requirements.
The specifications and schedules are sent from the planning department to the factory where the lift is manufactured.
On completion of the manufacturing process, the equipment is transported to the building site to be installed. Supervising the installation forms a very important part of lift mechanics' work. Lift mechanics thus need a thorough knowledge of the mechanical, electrical and electronic systems in the lift.
Working conditions vary from site to site in that dust, oil and grease are part of the job.

Lift mechanics must have a practical and technical aptitude. They must be interested in electro technology, since they have to perform tasks of a mechanical, electrical and electronic nature. They must also have a very strong sense of responsibility, since errors can cost lives.
