Jeweler Career Description

A Jeweler by profession makes Jewelry and most of the times it is a passed on profession where the Jeweler would have trained himself under his father or grandfather. Ninety percent of the jewelers in the industry are males. Women also venture into the Jewelry business but in different roles such as Jewelry designing and selling. The term “jeweler” has a varied definition just like other professions like a banker or a shopkeeper. A jeweler is a person who sells Jewelry, makes Jewelry, and designs Jewelry or a person who performs all these tasks.

What does a person do as a Jeweler?

It depends in which part of Jewelry making you are into. The Jeweler term is divided into “craftsmanship”, Management and “Salesmanship”.

Craftsmanship: Craftsmanship in the Jewelry business involves creating Jewelry by designing and making them. For people to be in this profession they are highly skilled and deft in their skills. As a jewelry designer you need to form ideas, imagine what jewelry you are going to make, conceptualize by defining the metal you are going to use and other materials like precious stones and beads have to be thought about. After the conceptualization the person needs to make them and give his or her ideas a form.

Sometimes craftsmanship also involves repair of jewelry and it is not as easy as it sounds. Repairing jewelry takes more effort than making a new piece of jewelry because the piece of jewelry that needs to be repaired has to be restored in the same way without damaging its intricate details.

Salesmanship: A person who sells jewelry is also called a jeweler. Selling of Jewelry is an art and the person who is doing it should have a good knowledge of the jewelry and good verbal skills. Jewelry is always expensive and people think a lot before buying jewelry. The jeweler should be able to convince the customer about the jewelry in question and also should be patient enough o explain or let the customer try different pieces of jewelry.

Management: There is a scope for management in large jewelry making companies like for example Tiffany’s, De Beers Diamonds and many more. TO become a part of the management team the person should have accomplished quite a lot in the jewelry business and should know the market dynamics very well.

How can I become a Jeweler?

One can become a jeweler by enrolling themselves in a design school. By studying in a design school at the end of the course the individual can either have their own Jewelry business or can have the prospect of being employed by a jewelry making company.
