Inventory and Store Manager Career Description

No business can function effectively without the necessary equipment and materials. Inventory and stores managers must ensure that the materials and equipment are available at the right time and place for the work to be done.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Inventory and stores managers' duties and responsibilities include:

» Control, storage and distribution of an organization's production materials and maintenance spares, as well as bookkeeping of accounts and financial control of the department's budget.

» Security and safety of the inventory as well as the maintenance of all inventory records.

» Establishment and maintenance of good communication between the stores and other departments such as Production, Engineering and Maintenance, Quality Control, Purchasing and Sales.

» Receipt of stock and notifying all interested departments of the arrival of stock.

» Inspection and checking of all deliveries and the return to the supplier of rejected stock.

» Moving of stock from the stores to the production areas (materials handling).

» Payment of accounts - all incoming goods must be checked against the purchase order and if everything is correct, the accounts department is advised to make payment to the supplier.

This is just a brief description of the duties and responsibilities of inventory and stores managers. The importance of their position is that they control and safeguard up to 70 per cent of an organization's entire expenditure. In most cases this involves millions of dollars.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Inventory and stores managers must have organizational skills. They must also be able to work well with people. They must have a strong sense of responsibility since they are in charge of valuable stock. They must therefore also be absolutely honest.

Where can I work?

All enterprises, those who deliver goods and those who render services, have stock and equipment. Qualified persons are needed to control this stock.
