Inspector of Works Career Description

The inspectors of works are responsible for the construction and maintenance of buildings. They are in control over aspects such as the construction process, building management, civil, mechanical, electro-technical and electronic components of the buildings owned by their employers.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Inspectors of works' main task is the maintenance of all government buildings in a certain geographical area assigned to them. Usually the inspectors of works are employed in a building, mechanical or electro-technical field, depending on their qualifications. They ensure that the government policy and building regulations are adhered to and implemented. When a project is assigned to a contractor, they ensure that the funds are wisely spent and that the original plan and specification is achieved and that the budget is met. They inspect existing buildings and properties that they supervise and report to their managers and give advice on steps that should be taken to do the necessary improvements to the buildings. They draw specifications and plans for work that must be done and ensure that the correct changes and improvements are made.

The three main areas are:

» Building specifications: When a building is being planned, the purpose of that building must be considered. A hospital must for example be built in such a way that the patients can orderly move through it, from admission to dismissal and there should be ample parking space. Technical aspects such as the water and sewer would also fall under this area.

» Mechanical specifications: The plans should make provision for mechanical aspects such as air-conditioning and steam boilers. This equipment should be kept in a good working order during the life of the building.

» Electro-technical specifications: This involves lights, electrical circuits, light fittings, electrical power points, lifts and electrical equipment. These people must make sure that all these elements in the buildings in their area are in a good working condition.

The inspectors of works work closely with the architects and/ or engineers. Their work involves office-work as well as on-site inspections of the buildings in their areas.
