The Department of Water Affairs is responsible for the development and utilisation of the country's water resources. Industrial technicians: Hydrometry in this Department are responsible for the planning, design and construction of river gauging stations and surface water measuring structures. They are also responsible for the calibration of measuring structures, the collection and computing of hydrological data.

Industrial technicians are responsible for the supervision of construction work. They supervise the gathering and evaluation of data at existing measuring stations and are responsible for the maintenance and improvement of existing measuring structures and instruments. Industrial technicians are involved in the preparation and survey of sites for flood calculations and make flow measurements, using instruments to calibrate measuring points.
