Hydrologist Career Description

Hydrology is the study of the occurrence, distribution, quality and movement of water in both natural and people-affected environments. Hydrologists contribute to the efficient planning, development and optimal, sustainable utilisation of available water resources, to ensure that sufficient water of acceptable quality can be supplied in the most cost-effective manner.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Water resources in South Africa are limited and part of the job of hydrologists is to contribute to the early identification of problem areas. Hydrologists are required to make accurate assessments of the available water, project future needs and make recommendations on long-term management practices. Hydrologists should therefore understand the natural environment, the needs of various sectors of water users (domestic, agricultural, industrial, etc.), aswell as the possible options available for water resource development. Hydrologists may be involved in establishing and operating measurement networks (to record rainfall, runoff, evaporation, etc.), the evaluation and analysis of hydrological data, the prediction of future trends and the determination of extremes (floods and droughts). Many hydrologists combine office work with short periods of fieldwork.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Hydrologists should be interested in the physical environment, be willing to undertake numerical analysis and be computer literate. A keen sense of observation, the ability to work systematically and accurately and the ability to communicate verbally and through written reports are also essential skills.

Where can I work?

Hydrologists are employed by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, municipalities and engineering or environmental consulting firms.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Yes, hydrologists can have their own businesses, especially in collaboration with engineering firms.
