Gravure Machine Minder Career Description
Gravure machine-minders are in control of the machines and responsible for making the necessary adjustments to ensure high quality printing.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
The work of gravure machine-minders include the tasks of setting up the machine with the printing-cylinders, adjusting the ink flow, setting the roller pressures and the "doctor blade" which removes the excess ink from the cylinders, adjusting the tensions of the material to be printed and making adjustments to folding and cutting equipment at the end of the machine.
Machine-minders work indoors and will be given the necessary equipment to help them perform their work. It is possible that earmuffs will be worn due to the noise levels in some areas.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Gravure machine-minders need to have good mechanical/technical skills, as well as good colour perception. Good health and fitness are valuable assets as much of the work is done standing, walking and climbing onto the machines.
Where can I work?
Due to the tremendous technological changes taking place in gravure-printing there is a continuous demand for young people to be trained to a high level of competence and the prospects for motivated young people are unlimited. They can be employed at the Government Printer and many independent printing companies.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Due to the tremendous technological changes it is not practical to be self employed.
