Jewelers and goldsmiths fabricate and repair jewelry such as rings, brooches, pendants and bracelets. They use fine precision tools and cut, saw, file and polish jewelry.

The jewelry manufacturing industry can be divided into two types of production:
» Craft work: Individual articles that are handmade by skilled craftsmen.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Artistic ability is necessary, as well as practical skill for working with tiny articles and fine precision tools. Technical aptitude, good eyesight and eye-hand co-ordination are also important. The ability to concentrate for long periods and to do neat, precise work, are important qualities of successful goldsmiths/jewelers. Sometimes a worker works on a particular piece for days or weeks and this requires perseverance and concentration.

Jewelers and goldsmiths are employed by jewelry manufacturers and retail jewelers.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
You can open your own jewelry shop or work from your home and design and make jewels for clients.
