Furrier Career Description
The work of a qualified furrier is to design and make an article - a coat, shawl, jacket, hat, handbag, collar or some other article - from fur according to the client's age, build and personality.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Many kinds of fur-bearing animals are ranched for their pelts, which the furrier turns into glamorous garments.
Furriers purchase furs on the international fur market. Sales are held monthly in Copenhagen. They select those, which they know their clients prefer, such as karakul and mink furs.
In designing and making garments, the furriers or their designers sketch detailed designs to the customer's measurements, taking into account the client's age, build and personality. A pattern is then drafted on paper and cut out in lightweight canvas, and a model garment is made and fitted to the customer. When a satisfactory fit has been achieved, the cutting of the skins and sorting them onto the pattern begins. Then a machinist puts them together and the
garment is almost ready for fitting on the customer.
After the fitting a liner puts the lining into the garment. The fur of the finished article is moistened and when dry, brushed to bring back liveliness to the hair roughened in the previous processes.
