Footwear Technologist Career Description
Footwear technologists work mainly in a shoe-factory or related organisation. They may specialize in design, production management, industrial engineering, quality control, or in general and executive management.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Footwear technologists' career descriptions will depend on their choice of specialization. In general, they will learn all the aspects of footwear production. This will involve them in a factory production situation using a variety of complex raw materials, either natural, or synthetic, or both. They may also work with technologically advanced machinery, electronics and computer systems used in the manufacturing process.
They may stay in this work environment, or choose to start their own factories, specializing, for example, in sports footwear.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need?
You should have an aptitude for practical work and machines, although if design were to be your direction of specialization, an interest in art and drawing would be desirable. You should be prepared to work in a production and business environment.
Where can I work?
The local industry is widespread and career opportunities exist in a large number of footwear factories, both big and small, and opportunities for promotion are good. You can also work in the supply of machinery or materials.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Since establishment costs for a small factory are reasonable, you may start your own business after qualifying.
