Fire-fighter Career Description

Fire-fighters are responsible for saving lives and for preventing and putting out various types of fires.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

The work of fire-fighters varies greatly as they have to deal with all sorts of emergencies. In saving the lives of others, their own lives are often at risk. They are often called to rescue people from car accidents, and to help injured people in inhospitable areas. They may also have to rescue people trapped on mountains, under water, or from collapsed buildings. They may have to fight veld fires or fires in built-up areas. Sometimes, they also have to deal with other emergencies, such as rescuing animals.

Fire-fighters have to be trained to carry out all these tasks, as they need to be able to decide quickly and accurately what action needs to be taken in any emergency. They often have to work under great stress, in uncomfortable and dangerous situations.

Preventing fires is an important part of firefighters' work and they therefore are also required to inspect and approve building plans and fire-prevention devices in buildings.

Lectures, pre-fire planning visits and drills keep fire-fighters ready for their duties. They are also responsible for keeping their vehicles and equipment in good condition, and to present lectures and demonstrations to the public (such as school groups).

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Fire-fighters should be healthy and adventurous. Their work requires strength and physical fitness. They need to be brave, but calm. They must also have initiative and keen perception. Common sense, discipline and the ability to work in a team are important. Fire-fighters should not be afraid of heights or confined spaces.

Where can I work?

Fire-fighters usually work for municipalities (local authorities) and regional service councils, but may also be employed at airports or by large companies and industries.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

No, this occupation does not offer direct opportunities for self-employment. However, fire-fighters may use the knowledge and experience they have gained, in businesses, which market, manufacture or sell fireprevention or fire-fighting equipment.
