Farm Worker Career Description
The farm workers perform the tasks necessary to run and maintain the farm. Farm workers work closely with and under the supervision of the farmer, manager or the farm foreman.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
The nature of the work varies according to the type of farming such as crop farming, livestock farming, fruit, vegetable and grape farming. On most farms some form of mixed farming is usually practised.
Farm workers' responsibilities can vary from elementary tasks like ploughing, planting, seedlings, cultivation, pruning, irrigation, fertilisation and the control of plant diseases to more advanced tasks like basic maintenance and handling of tractors, farming implements and other equipment, as well as the construction and maintenance of farm buildings and fences. After harvesting, the products must be sorted, packed and transported to the agricultural co-operation.
On a livestock farm the farm workers are involved in caring for the animals and the control of illnesses. They must have a basic knowledge of the production of meat, dairy products and wool, as well as stud farming and the dipping and marking of animals.
The more experienced farm workers can assist the farm foreman in the orientation and training of new workers. Farm workers can
work in some industries and are often expected to work after hours during the peak season (Le. fruit farms, wine farms etc.).

Farm workers should be interested in nature and should like to work with animals. Good interpersonal relations are necessary because farm workers often work in a team. A practical ability and mechanical insight are necessary to work with the farming machinery and equipment.

Farm workers can be employed at any farm. The farm workers prospects and the possibility to be promoted to supervisor and even foreman improve according to their qualifications.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
A farm owner or tenant farmer necessarily employs farm workers.
