Electrician Career Description

The electrician is involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and usage of electricity.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Electricians install electrically operated equipment such as generators, water-heaters, refrigerators, stoves and heaters. They are also responsible for all maintenance and repair of this equipment. By virtue of the nature of their work they can specialise in armature winding, cable-splicing and the maintenance of high-tension cables.

During the building, for example, of a new factory, the electrician must ensure that the electrical cables are installed. By law, only qualified electricians are allowed to connect cables to electric motors and switchgear and to handle the electrical wiring of all electrically equipped buildings.

The electrician must inspect all motors, switchgear and transformers regularly to ensure safe functioning. The electrician working at a power station must install and maintain power generators. All electrical meters and transformers must be serviced regularly.

In the distribution of electricity, the electrician supervises the erection of pylons, the connection of high-tension cables on these pylons and the thorough insulation of the pylons. Suitable transformers and switchboards, which must reduce the current, must be installed at substations.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Electricians must be alert and cautious, as their work can be dangerous. They must be able to function under pressure and still make responsible decisions. Electricians must be physically fit, have good eyesight and not be colour-blind. They must work accurately and be tactful especially when in a supervisory capacity.

Where can I work?

Organisations and private enterprises employ electricians. There is a growing demand for electricians, as buildings with intricate electrical systems constantly need checking.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Electricians with the necessary capital and experience can start their own electrical businesses.
