Earth-moving equipment mechanics Career Description

Earth-moving equipment mechanics specialise in fault detection, maintenance and carrying out repairs on heavy construction machinery. This equipment is used in the construction of highways, dams, airports, pipelines and in mining operations.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Earth-moving equipment mechanics are concerned with the repair of the entire machine, from replacing the tyres, to checking mechanical components of such machinery. Apart from the repairing of the hydraulic systems and power shift transmission, they also repair electrical and electronic systems. Earth-moving equipment mechanics must therefore be familiar with electrical, electronic and hydraulic principles and must also have knowledge of engines and fuel systems.

They repair and do renewal of various fuel systems. This involves removing, dismantling, setting, calibrating and replacing components, especially in fuel injection systems.

When mechanical parts have to be manufactured, earth-moving equipment mechanics work from drawings and make use of various measuring instruments.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Earth-moving equipment mechanics must be able to work independently, think analytically and have a mechanical and practical aptitude. They must have initiative and be able to work quickly and accurately. Dexterity, good hand eye co-ordination and good physical health are other important qualities. Earthmoving equipment mechanics must be able to adapt to changes in technology and therefore be able to work from service manuals. They need good communication skills so that they can liaise effectively with customers on site.

Earth-moving equipment mechanics are employed by companies who market and service earth-moving equipment, the irrigation machine industry and tractor manufacturers.
