Driver and Stacker Career Description

There is a certain measure of similarity between the tasks of drivers and stackers (or forklift operators), and those of lift operators. Whereas lift operators have to lift or lower goods to great heights or depths, drivers and stackers usually work on one level and by means of their machine lift and stack bundles of goods on top of each other, no higher than the ceiling or roof of the floor on which they operate.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

The machine which drivers and stackers operate is usually a battery-powered machine for indoor use or a petrol or diesel-powered machine for outdoor operation.

After having fork-lifted the load off the floor to a height enough to clear possible obstructions on its way to its destination, drivers reverse to the track, on which they have to travel and then move forward to the site, where they have to deposit the load. After having manipulated their machines into the correct places and at the correct angles, they forklift or lower the load in its exact position. They - return and transport the remaining goods in the same way.

The machine used in out-of-door operations is normally a counter balance forklift. The design of the forklift may vary, depending on the type and size of the material to be moved and stacked. Even large trees in the forests are moved and stacked in this way.

The working conditions and working hours differ from one industry to another, depending on the nature of the products produced.

Some industries operate only during normal working hours during the day, whilst other industries work two or three shifts daily, in which case the operators change shifts on a regular basis. Overtime must sometimes be worked, for which overtime remuneration is paid. Like workers in other sections of the industry, forklift drivers and stackers enjoy annual holidays, sick leave and pension facilities.
