Draughtsman Career Description
Draughtsmen can work in various specialisation fields. They have to transform the ideas of the engineer or architect into a drawing on paper.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
An engineering or architectural drawing or plan is the graphical means of capturing an idea on paper. The drawing is the starting point or a record of the final product.
Draughtsman are involved in every type of construction project. They are employed in more than 24 disciplines, among which are architecture, mechanical, civil and structural engineering, piping, town planning and mine surveying. The requirements of the various disciplines differ and therefore necessitates specialization.
The industry distinguishes between detail draughts men and design draughtsman. Design draughtsman usually handle work of a more advanced nature than detail draughtsman. Many drawing offices also employ tracers. Tracers prepare final drawings and assist the draughtsman. Some offices also employ draught assistants who assist draughtsman in a wider field of activities.
Draughtsman can use the traditional manual and tracing methods, or they can use the computer to draw their designs.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Draughtsman must have drawing and designing ability, but it is not necessary for them to be an artist. They must be able to translate concepts on to paper and to visualize things in three-dimensional terms. The work requires accuracy and manual dexterity. Draughtsman should have a lot of patience because their work involves a great deal of detail. An interest in computers will stand draughtsman in good stead by helping them to cope with fast-developing technology.
Where can I work?
The government service, local authorities, Chemical Industries, consulting engineers, architects, supermarket chains, and many other institutions employ draughtsman.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Draughtsman can be employed on contract basis and work as free-lance draughtsman. To set up their own business, draughtsman
need to have their own equipment, which is very expensive.
