Domestic radio and television mechanicians find the source of the problem by checking the tubes, observing the picture and sound, and looking for loose or broken connections. They must therefore have knowledge of wiring and mounting of components and be able to use simple meters, transistor and valve testers and electronic voltmeters.
Mechanicians may set up, install and adjust television antennas and receivers and instruct customers in the proper use of this equipment. They install and repair stereo component systems, videotape machines and car radios and must also have knowledge of oscilloscopes and other instruments. They may be responsible for the mechanical maintenance and adjustment of record players and it is also important that they are up to date with electronic drawings and circuit diagrams.
Domestic radio and television mechanicians work in a well-equipped workshop or in the client’s home. They may be required to travel a lot.
