Diesel Mechanic Career Description

Diesel mechanics' tasks are mainly to diagnose and repair mechanical. and electrical faults of diesel vehicles, construction machinery and detached diesel engines, as well as their maintenance.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Diesel mechanics diagnose the cause of the problem in a defective engine, gearbox, suspension or differential. Through experience they can often locate the problem by listening to the noise in the engine, although electronic diagnosing equipment is normally used. Modern tools and equipment are used to ensure accurate repairs.

If it proves impossible to repair an engine on location, it is taken to the workshop. All parts are cleaned carefully and repaired or replaced.

Diesel mechanics also complete job cards, time the work that is done and furnish information on the parts that should be replaced. They also assist in training. apprentices and supervise the people assisting them in their work. It is essential that the various engine parts are clean when they are assembled and therefore a great number of cleaning agents are used to remove oil and dirt. Overalls are worn to protect mechanics' clothes.
