Diesel Loco Driver Career Description

Diesel loco drivers in the mining or heavy industries are mainly responsible for driving a diesel loco with the aim to transport refuse products, material and components between sections.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Diesel loco drivers that are described in this article, must not be confused with the traindrivers (employed by Spoomet). To ensure that production in factories continues, raw materials, components and other articles must be transported in an effective way between sections on the production line. The various sections or departments in the heavy industry are spread over a large area and an effective transport system is necessary for maximum production. Material components and products must be transported between divisions in a certain time and in a safe way. It is here where diesel loco drivers in mining and industry playa very important role. After they have received their instructions by radio or according to schedule, the drivers make sure that their tasks are completed within time. At the end of each shift they write reports on the work they have done.

It is necessary for diesel loco drivers to keep the diesel loco in good working order, because a delay in transport causes a reduction in production. In contrast with the steam loco drivers, the diesel loco drivers work in relatively clean conditions. Although most of their work is done outdoors, they are not exposed to too much change in temperature, dust and gas, as is the case with the other production workers.

Usually they work shifts during a 48-hour week. In the mines for instance, most diesel loco drivers work during the day, but it may also be expected of them to work at night.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Diesel loco drivers must be mature, responsible and reliable workers, who can make the right. decisions. To ensure that the drivers act quickly and correctly if something goes wrong, they must be wide awake and continuously on guard. Good eyesight and eye-hand co-ordination are prerequisites.

Because diesel loco drivers are in charge of the shunters and must report to their supervisors, it is necessary that they communicate well. To determine whether applicants have the necessary aptitude, they must undergo psychometric tests before appointment. Physical strength is not important, but they must be able to work long shifts, which can be very demanding. They must keep to transport regulations and give priority to their own and other's' safety.
