Dancer Career Description
The art of dance incorporates classical dance, drama, music and mime to create an integrated performing art. Career possibilities include the following avenues of specialisation: dancer, teacher, choreographer, choreologist, dance master and dance historian.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Professional dancers are subjected to prolonged, irregular and taxing working schedules that require physical and mental stamina. Dancers participate in training sessions, rehearsals and performances.
Choreographers create new dance works and should have a comprehensive knowledge of all the relevant aspects of dance, in order to translate their ideas into dance compositions.
Choreologists notate new dance works and read written notation scores - in this way they assist the dance master who is responsible for the teaching and rehearsing of dance repertoire.
Dance teachers are involved with the instruction and scientific training of children and students in basic dance techniques and for dance examinations.
Dance historians teach and research the history of dance and provide an academic and philosophic perspective on the cultural development of this art.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Apart from having the correct physique, temperament and a thorough working knowledge of various dance styles and
techniques, professional dancers should have a well-developed artistic sensibility.

Career and work opportunities exist at theatres, art and dance schools, television services and the general entertainment industries. Trained professionals can freelance or consider private studio teaching
