Customer and Excise Officer Career Description

Customs and Excise is a branch of the Department of Finance. The head of the branch is the Commissioner of Customs and Excise. Customs and Excise can be divided into three groups, namely: Customs and Excise officer concerned with customs affairs. Customs and Excise officer concerned with excise affairs. Customs and Excise officer concerned with passenger and external services.

Customs and Excise officers concerned with customs affairs
The main task of Customs and Excise officers concerned with customs affairs is to control all imports and exports. They must ensure that the correct import duties are paid through checking the tariff classification of all goods. In order to benefit local industries, some goods are duty-free or partially dutyfree. Goods are sometimes examined to determine the composition thereof. Control is necessary to ensure that goods such as fauna and flora are not imported or exported illegally. Customs and Excise officers also inspect books and documents of importers and exporters to ensure that legislation is complied with. Except for these main tasks, Customs and Excise officers also have other duties that are not described here, such as controlling goods stored in warehouses.

Customs and Excise officers concerned with excise affairs
The term "Excise" refers to tax levied on certain goods produced within the country such as cigarettes, beer, alcoholic drinks, petrol and motor vehicles. The Customs and Excise officers concerned with excise affairs must ensure that excise duties are levied from firms which are licensed to manufacture taxable products. In some cases officers are stationed at the premises of large manufacturers, such as the manufacturers of motor vehicles. The officers are involved in inspections, stocktaking and the control of all sales.

Customs and Excise officers concerned with passenger and external services
These officers are concerned with passengers and crew members of ships or airlines that enter or leave the country. They are stationed at places of arrival or departing in the Republic such as frontier-posts and airports. The Customs and Excise officers must control smuggling and ensure that import duties are paid. Passengers and their luggage are examined when necessary. Customs and Excise provides uniforms to these officers.
