Crop Protection and Animal Health Career Description

The crop protection and animal health industry is primarily responsible for the development, manufacture and marketing of products to promote and protect the health of animals and to combat pests, weeds and diseases on crops.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Sales representative
Sales representatives give up-to-date information on their products and their use, as well as basic information on farming, crops and animals, to farmers. Their main objective is to increase the sales of their company's products.

Technical/research officer
Technical/research officers are responsible for the development of new products. They are concerned with the entire process, from the needs assessment and development to the registration of the product. They study the effects of the product and continually try to improve the product. Technical/research officers do laboratory as well as field work and they can specialise in fields such as Entomology or Plant Pathology.

Technical services officer
Technical services officers help to promote the technical advantages of the company's products to customers. They work closely with government research institutes and company sales, marketing and research officers. They help to prepare promotional material and scientific data. They are often the link between the researchers and the sales personnel.

Production/laboratory technician
Production/laboratory technicians compound and formulate crop protection and animal health products, according to laid-down procedures and methods. They conduct experiments to develop, manufacture and improve the formulation of products.
