Concrete Technician Career Description
Modem building and construction practice relies heavily upon concrete technology. The concrete technicians or technologists are experts in the production and use of concrete, and have thorough knowledge of its constituent materials and all their properties.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Concrete technicians/technologists are involved with the practical and technical aspects of concrete construction. They conduct laboratory tests to determine the properties and performance of building materials such as cement, stone, sand, extenders and chemical admixtures. The information obtained is used for mix design purposes and may also be used to compile specifications.
They also supervise on construction sites to ensure that correct concrete practice is followed and tests are carried out to ensure that the quality of construction materials used complies with the relevant specifications.
Research projects and special investigations relating to building and construction materials and techniques are also undertaken.
Concrete technicians/technologists have to set and maintain high standards of design specification and workmanship to ensure that concrete structures are strong, durable and also economical.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Concrete technicians / technologists should have an aptitude for Mathematics and Science subjects. They should be able to work methodically and accurately and find laboratory work interesting. They should also keep up with the latest developments in the concrete industry and be able to work independently.
Where can I work?
Employment opportunities exist at concrete materials suppliers, the ready-mixed concrete industry, pre-cast works, in site laboratories, in the admixture industry.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
There are currently no known self-employment opportunities for concrete technicians and technologists, but people with training in this field can use their knowledge/of the building industry by working as building contractors.
