Clothing Manager Career Description
Clothing manager's plan, organize, co-ordinate and control the production of clothing in factories.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Clothing managers are responsible for production planning and control at clothing manufacturers. They must have a sound knowledge of the skills and techniques used in the manufacturing of clothing. They must ensure that a high standard of quality is met and that products are supplied to the retailer on time and within cost.
Clothing managers have to liaise with other functional managers on issues such as design, marketing, finance and human resources.
The major part of their work entails planning the production process in order to improve the existing system and ensuring the correct implementation of plans. They also have to check that the production personnel work according to the production plan and that instructions are carried out correctly.
Clothing managers must ensure that materials including threads, trimmings, fabrics, interlinings etc. are ordered and received on time, since the production of new clothes has to take place far in advance of the selling season. There needs to be a close working relationship with the designer in interpreting the designs into mass-produced garments.
Clothing managers might also be involved in work-study, human resources, production, cutting, quality control, administration, general management, marketing and distribution.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Clothing managers must have good organizational, analytical and communication skills. Technical skills are necessary to understand garment, pattern and textile technology.
Where can I work?
Clothing managers are employed by clothing manufacturers. They can also be employed at clothing chain stores or work as trainee textile or garment buyers.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Clothing managers can start their own clothing manufacturing companies. They can also work on a free-lance basis as trainers (supervisors / machinists), in an advisory capacity (production planning / work study) or as constructors and graders of patterns for other manufacturing companies.
