Modern clothing designers have to know how to relate fabrics and designs to market needs. They must have the ability to cost and carry out designs through to the finished sample garments. Main career possibilities include designing for individuals, for wholesale or for mass production.
Custom designers design clothing for special customers who want truly unique clothing. Clothing made by custom designers is usually expensive because of the labour involved in the time-consuming processes of design, fitting and construction.
Couture designers produce clothing in limited quantities and their names appear on the labels. Such designers are usually well known. Couture designers produce seasonal collections of clothes that are shown to clients, who then place their orders.
Stylists select popular garments to be copied. They may adapt or change the style to make the garments less expensive to produce. Freelance designers sell sketches of designs to manufacturers.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Clothing designers should have an interest in fashion, an eye for detail and a feel for line and colour. Creativity and a good imagination are also important. Clothing designers must be able to put their ideas into practical concrete reality. They must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines, solve problems of a practical nature and initiate changes. Designers who manage their own businesses must have good business sense.
