Cleaner Career Description

Cleaners maintain offices, hospitals, schools, hotels and apartment buildings in a clean and orderly condition for the comfort and safety of the people who work or live there.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

The comfort and pleasant working conditions of a large number of people often depend on a small group of cleaners. These workers clean floors, windows and walls, vacuum carpets, dust furniture, change the linen in hotels and hospitals, empty dustbins and so forth.

A wide variety of cleaning agents and equipment are used by cleaners; from mop and bucket to electrically powered machines and special cleaning solutions.

A group of cleaners mostly work under a supervisor, responsible for a section of the building. Most offices are cleaned while the personnel are not there and therefore cleaners often work evenings or early mornings. In buildings requiring 24-hours maintenance, such as hospitals and hotels, cleaners may be required to work shifts.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Cleaners are often in contact with the public. In such cases it is expected of them to be courteous, tactful and neat. Cleaners must be able to follow instructions precisely and be motivated to get on with their tasks without supervision.

The cleaner should have good health, as much of the work is tiring and is expected to be completed quickly and thoroughly. Many tasks are also monotonous and the cleaner must be able to tolerate the boredom of the job.

Where can I work?

Cleaners are employed at offices, schools, hotels, apartment buildings and various businesses.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

In this occupation it is not practical to be selfemployed.
