City Treasurer Career Description
The treasurer's department forms the core of the municipality. City treasurers are responsible for the smooth and efficient running of the financial and information systems. Town treasurers as well as their staff will normally have an accounting background and most of them will have further training in finance.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Treasurers and their staff are in charge of all the financial aspects of the municipality. This can be divided into the following main areas:
» Income section.
» Expenditure section.
» Financial administration section.
» Data processing section.
» Internal audit.
Town treasurers are the heads of the departments and to help them to control the departments they have section heads for the five different sections.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need?
Persons planning a career as a city treasurer should have an aptitude for mathematics, the ability to make sound judgements based on the interpretation of facts and figures, be able to compare, analyse and concentrate. They must be figure-orientated, should have high standards of integrity as well as good relations with people.
Where can I work?
Strong competition for available employment opportunities may be expected.
Legislation has been promulgated whereby professional status has been granted to municipal accountants. Employment opportunities exist at any municipality.
