Carpenter Career Description
Carpenters generally have to cut and shape timber for construction and fitting out of buildings.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Unlike some of the other trades, carpentry has not become highly mechanised. Apart from certain portable electric tools, the traditional tools of hammer, saw and plane are still used extensively by carpenters.
The work of carpenters commence at the planning stage with the study of the architectural drawings to enable them to select the correct timber for the work. Carpenters have to be able to recognise and utilise the different types of timber to their best advantage.
Carpentry can be divided into two main sections - construction carpentry which entails erecting roofs and form work for concrete on site; and finishing carpentry, done mainly inside, such as hanging doors, erecting ceilings and fitting cupboards.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Prospective carpenters should enjoy working outdoors and be moderately fit and healthy. For carpenters to do their work accurately and neatly the following will be expected of them: hand dexterity, good eye-hand co-ordination and spacial and form perception.
Where can I work?
There are employment opportunities in the building industry, the public service, construction companies and so forth.
