A butler is a person who runs a busy household with professionalism and people who have studied the art of butling and house management. That is the actual definition of butlers, however today a butler can find opportunities of work in hotels, resorts, bed & breakfast places and many other forms of restaurants and hotels. The butler is actually the chief servant of the household, can be a personal assistant to the employer and some butlers are even trained in book keeping. The common notion that a butler only looks after the kitchen is wrong. A butler looks after almost all the aspects of running the house including house keeping, upholstery, library keeping, small accounts and much more. For huge households and rich societies a butler is a boon because these people do not have the time to run the nitty gritty details of the household.

In olden days the butler was a person who would keep the wine cellar and was actually called a bottler. Eventually somewhere down the line the bottler started handling many more tasks of the household of the vineyard owners and soon came to be known as butler. Today a butler is a juggler who performs many tasks with efficiency and correctness. Butler ruins everything within the house and outside the house like groceries and cleanliness. Typically a butler does not take care of the garden. A Butler employ’s and trains other servants to run the household. A butler organizes big or small parties on the demand of the employer. A butler takes care of crockery and silverware of the household. The upholstery, carpets, rugs, foyer, landings, bedrooms and every single aspect of furnishing is taken care of by the butler. The butler ensures that everything is spic and span most of the time. To put it in a nutshell a butler is a manager of the household.
How do I become a butler?
To become a butler you need to take up a professional butling course from a professional institute. However this is not a must but it is better you do that. There are many aspects to being a butler that you can learn from such institutes. A butler course is different from the Hotel Management courses which teaches people about culinary skills. Butler profession is more to do with management and running tasks. Many butlers learn through experience which is the right way, however doing a course will help you become a better professional.
