Bricklayer Career Description

Bricklayers are usually the first tradesmen on a building project and are responsible for building the inner and outer walls of the building.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

After the foundations of the building have been completed the bricklayers start to "set out" the brickwork. This involves two important aspects of the work, namely the marking out of the walls according to the specifications on the design and the planning of the arrangement of the bricks, in other words the position of every brick on top of the other. Once these preparatory steps have been carried out, the bricklayers then start building a wall.

Bricklayers are also responsible for inserting doors and windows, for the building of solid and cavity walls, steps and free-standing piers and arches.

The bricklayer's work is of a varying and even divergent nature and the skills required are often severely tested by the complexity of the building designs.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Bricklayers should have sturdy bodies and physical endurance. They should enjoy working with their hands and using tools and equipment. Bricklayers also have to understand the drawings of architects and engineers. Although this craft is essentially physical, it still offers artistic persons an opportunity to create something lasting and beautiful.

Where can I work?

There is always a need for new buildings, and existing buildings will always have to be maintained. For this reason, there is a constant demand for devoted and hardworking bricklayers. There are employment opportunities in government departments, construction companies, the building industry and so forth.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Experienced bricklayers can practise their trade on a private basis or they can start their own businesses.
