Branch Manager Career Description

Branch managers are responsible for the management of specialty or department stores. Their responsibilities include the profits of the store, the costs, stock, security and administration of the store, as well as the selection, interviewing and training of staff

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Branch managers plan, organise, co-ordinate and control branch stores or supermarkets. They work in an office for part of the day where they plan the activities of the branch and see to the administrative duties, but also move through the store to attend to matters that require their attention, and communicate with their staff and the clients in the store. They are in control of the administration, price-fixing, ordering and rotation of stock. They must ensure that the store's budget is congruent with the budget set up by the store's head office and that the store shows a profit. They must also control theft and breakage.

Branch managers are further responsible for matters such as the interpretation of research results concerning productivity and personnel performance, motivation of staff, staff registers, medical and pension benefits and the payment of wages. They also have to select, appoint and train staff members.

Prospective branch managers must be willing to accept transfers to other branches as top management sees fit. Their willingness to accept such transfers will improve their chances of promotion.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? Candidates should be between the ages of 22 and 45 years and can start their careers as salespersons or trainee managers. Branch managers must have good communication skills and be able to work well with people. They must be good leaders and be willing to take the responsibility of the management of a store. Prospective branch managers have to be very motivated, hard-working and willing to work overtime

Branch managers can work at any store that sells products or services.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Experienced or trained branch managers have all the necessary knowledge to start and manage their own businesses in retailing. Depending on their available capital and their motivation to be successful, they can start any small or medium sized business.
