Boilermaker Career Description

Boilermakers manufacture, construct and repair structures of steel, plate and piping, ranging from pressure vessels for power stations and petrochemical plants, to mine head gears, bridges and oil-drilling platforms.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Boiler making involves a great deal of detailed work. Prior to the construction of a new boiler, all the material, which goes into the construction of a boiler, must first be prepared before the actual work of assembly and construction can begin.

Boilermakers are provided with specifications in the form of plans or blueprints. After the plans have been studied, the actual work begins. The materials or plates are marked off according to the specifications. The boilermakers then cut the metal to the correct dimensions. The material is straightened, bent or rolled to the required angles and curves, so that when they are assembled, they will fit into each other and form the intended shape.

At this stage the actual construction work can be started. The different parts are fitted and welded together.

Boilermakers work indoors in workshops, or factories, or outdoors on construction sites.
