Automotive Trimmer Career Description
Automotive trimmers are qualified tradesmen who are responsible for upholstering seats and lining the roof, floor and door panels of cars.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Trimmers make use of tools and equipment such as scissors, needles, tongs, hammers, screwdrivers and special sewing machines.
After the seats and handles have been removed carefully, the material needed is marked and cut according to patterns and sketches, which are given to the trimmers. Trimmers must choose the right type of material for every part of the vehicle. After having completed the upholstery and lining, they have to see that all hinges and handles are replaced and that the material is waterproofed where necessary. Trimmers are, however, not only responsible for the upholstery and trimming, but must see to it that the seats of the vehicle are fitted in the correct position.
Trimmers work indoors. It is essential that the work be done in a clean workshop as they work with new materials.
Requirements
What kind of personality do I need? Trimmers' work requires neatness and thoroughness. They must be reasonably strong to be able to pull material tightly over the frames. They must be inclined to work accurately and must be patient as some aspects of their work are time-consuming.
Where can I work?
Trimming in large motor car factories today is done mostly by machine. There is therefore no great demand for qualified trimmers. Panel-beating firms, however, employ trimmers and in the motor manufacturing industry vacancies do occur occasionally.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
As the demand in the formal sector is not so large, it may be difficult to begin your own business. One can, however, start a business in co-operation with a panel-beater or work from one's home.
