Artist Career Description

Art is a product of creative thought and the human interpretation of ideas and emotions. Artists try to put ideas or images into concrete presentations, giving special attention to material, colour, form, line and texture.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

The main areas of specialization are sculpture, drawing, painting and print-making, or a variation of the different art forms.

Sculpture is a three-dimensional art form. Artists use materials such as stone, wood, metal, clay, soft materials and plastics. Other techniques that are used are for example welding and lamination of wood.

Artists involved in drawing, painting and print-making translate their ideas onto surfaces using different tools and media to obtain the desired effect. Print-making makes it possible to reproduce the same image over and over again. A variety of methods are used.

Artists can also use their artistic skills in the following careers:

» Animators use series of drawings assembled in a particular way and photographed so as to give the impression of movement when run through a projector.

» Cartoonists have to convey humorous insights into persons or events on behalf of newspapers, magazines or private companies. To save time, cartoonists often build up "libraries" for themselves, complete with photographic filing systems of political, sport and public personalities.

» Colour consultants work with architects, interior decorators and home owners to provide expert advice on the variation and effect of colours and shades.

» Display artists are responsible for displays in shops, museums, international shows etc. They use their skills to display merchandise or items as attractive as possible. They must be able to picture, draw, design and paint the decor for exhibits and make models. They must be able to work with wood, cardboard and other material necessary to build a display.
