It is the task of armature-winders to locate the broken part of an electric motor of which the coils are burnt out or damaged, and to repair or replace it with a new one, or completely rewind all the coils
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Wire coils constitute some of the most important parts of any electrical machine. Armature-winders use various kinds of testing instruments to locate the damaged coil. Once the damaged coil is found, armature-winders have to decide whether they should repair the damaged coil or whether a complete rewind of the motor is necessary. When the motor is dismantled, it is cleaned to remove all dirt, because even a speck of metal can cause a short circuit in a coil. Armature-winders are supplied with diagrams of the relevant motor on which they are working. Sometimes they have to draw the diagrams themselves.
Armature-winders check every coil thoroughly and record all detail while working at a bench in a well-lit workshop. The working conditions are very clean.
The work can become repetitive when coils must be rewinded, since the process must be watched the whole time. This could leads to eye-strain.
What kind of personality do I need? Dexterity and mental alertness are needed for the rewinding of coils, since one mistake can cause a delay and a waste of money. Tidiness and methodical working habits are also important.
Where can I work?
Engineering companies usually employ armature winders.
Can I work for myself in this occupation?
Armature winders can start their own business.
