Armament Fitter Career Description

Armament fitters are responsible for inspecting, servicing and repairing firearms, artillery weaponry and weaponry equipment. They must also acquire a thorough knowledge of ammunition and explosives.

What am I going to do in this occupation?

Armament fitters' tasks are as varied as the diversity of weapons used in modem warfare. Every modem defence force consists of various subdivisions, each with its own special types of weapons. It is thus clear that although armament fitters should have a wide knowledge of different types of weapons and ammunition, the nature of their work will depend largely on the division where they are employed. They have to specialise in the types of weapons used in their unit.

Apprentices are trained in the basic principals of fitting, including filing, sawing, chiseling, screw- and nut- threading, drilling and turning. A wide knowledge of metals is required as they work mostly with metals such as iron, steel, carbon iron, aluminum, alloy steel, copper and its alloys and magnesium and its alloys.

Armament fitters must know the basic function and construction of weapons. Although most weapons are based on the same principles, they are expected to dismantle and reassemble a wide variety of guns and pistols until they know the general description, names of parts and the loading, unloading and cleaning process of almost every conceivable weapon.

The main tasks of armament fitters are the copy servicing and repairing of firearms in order to keep them in sound working condition. They may sometimes be expected to manufacture small parts, but an armourer usually does this.

As firearms cannot function without ammunition, and bombs and mortars are useless without warheads, it is essential that armament fitters have a sound knowledge of the chemistry of explosives as well. They should become familiar with different types of explosives, as well as their properties and uses.

Their working conditions depend on where they are working. It could be a workshop, ship, or aeroplane. assembling factory for weaponry or even on the battlefront.

Working hours, salaries, benefits, etc. differ from one employer to another.

Requirements

What kind of personality do I need? The most important quality of armament fitters is accuracy in their work, because any weapon must function with absolute accuracy. Mathematical and mechanical abilities may be useful, as they have to interpret working drawings and use instruments accurately. They must also possess good hand dexterity, be well disciplined and must abide by all safety regulations applicable to their trade at all times.

Where can I work?

The demand for armament fitters is limited, as mainly the National Defense Force, Navy, Police Service and Air Force employ qualified artisans. A few work opportunities are available in the armament industry.

Can I work for myself in this occupation?

Self-employment is not possible in this occupation.
