Area Manager Career Description
Area managers are responsible for the management and overall profitability of a group of stores. They promote the generation of sales and forms an important link in the management communication chain, by liasing with store managers as well as with key departments at head-office.
What am I going to do in this occupation?
Area managers are responsible for the generation of turnover at the store through the implementation of marketing activities, preparation of budgets and targets, investigation of variances and the application of corrective actions.
They are responsible for recruiting staff, overseeing their induction, training and appraisals, recommending salary increases and monitoring their career development. They set objectives and motivate all the staff.
Area manager must ensure that all stores have adequate stock levels to achieve their targets and that window displays and promotions conform to plan. They also arrange the transfer of merchandise between stores.
Area managesr control all administration and ensures that cost parameters are understood and controlled by the stores. Expenses are authorised by the area managers and they supervise stocktaking and prepare security reports.

What kind of personality do I need?
Area manager must be able to deal with people at all levels and gain the co-operation of people. They must have strong leadership skills, be well organised and decisive. A high energy level, self-motivation and a sense of responsibility are also important, as is the ability to cope with considerable pressure.
